Photo Aging/ Sun Damage

Photo Aging is the premature aging of skin due to extended exposure to the sun. The effects of UV radiation cause the skin to develop a leathery texture, wrinkles, sagging appearance and even take on a yellowish "aged" look in some cases. Those days of endless sun-worshipping can come back to haunt you!

People at risk for premature aging through sun damage are those who burn easily because their skin doesn't contain enough melanin, a dark pigment. It's estimated that 80% of photodamage occurs before the age of 18 but is usually not noticeable until adulthood because of the years of exposure usually necessary for the condition to fully develop. Regular use of a high protection factor sunscreen can sometimes prevent photodamage, but for some the time for prevention might have already passed.

Photodamaged skin needs a multidimensional approach to get the best results. With such a wide array of options available for rejuvenation, we can customize the treatments specific to each individual patient needs. We address dyspigmentation/brown spots, broken capillaries, coarse texture pores and fine lines with an advanced rejuvenation procedure called photodynamic therapy.

In addition we have complementary treatments to address skin laxity, laser to address stubborn brown spots, SmoothBeam for collagen stimulation to soften wrinkles, refine pores and fill in acne scars.

FAQ's

Who is at risk for Photoaging/Sun damage?

Anyone who spends time in the sun without taking protective measures such as the use of a high number sunscreen or avoiding the outdoors when the sun is at its peak is vulnerable to photoaging/sundamage. Of course, you should be able to enjoy your time outdoors but you should also be aware of the dangers caused by sun damage.

How long does photoaging/Sun damage take to manifest?

Photoaging photographs show the cumulative effects of the sun that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The true condition of the skin takes time to surface so, a person who has underlying skin damage at the age of 18 may still look attractive, but 20 years later the damage will show up in the form of wrinkles, age spots, sagging skin and warty growths called keratoses. These symptoms often amplify the effects of aging causing a patient to appear older than they really are. You can think of photoaging/sun damage as a condition that lies dormant below the surface until it is ready to manifest itself and when it does it robs a person of their youthful appearance.

Should you be worried about skin cancer and photoaging?

Both skin cancer and photoaging are a cause for concern. The unattractiveness of prematurely aged skin may show up early in life and the risk of skin cancer may be heightened. Skin cancer, however, is usually very severe in terms of the potential outcomes - from having a mole removed to possible death. Photoaging provides a good indication, not only of skin damage, but also of skin cancer. The awareness of photoaging may prevent continued exposure to the sun in light of the fear of developing both photoaged skin and/or skin cancer later in life.

How does photoaging affect the skin?

The UV rays from the sun penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. This may result in several consequences: . premature wrinkling may result due to the breakdown of elastic tissues and collagen . the skin becomes blotchy and dark spots may develop . young skin is argued to be more sensitive to the sun than older skin, mainly because the cells in young skin are multiplying more rapidly and these cells are more sensitive to radiation.
